VACCA Workshop
On Saturday June 29th, 2024 six Obstetric trainees and our RGPSA Obstetrics Advisor, Dr Kris Bascomb, took part in a ventouse delivery workshop provided by the Vacca Academy and funded by the RGPSA.
Participants undertook a theory session covering all aspects of safe ventouse use during delivery before getting hands on with some practical sessions. A great day of education and an excellent opportunity for some often widely dispersed colleagues to reunite and reconnect professionally and personally.

Rural Generalist Anaesthesia (RGA) Training Program Orientation Workshop January 2024
Diploma of Rural General Anaesthesia
2024 sees the second year of the Rural Generalist Anaesthesia Training Program (RGA) that has been jointly developed between ANZCA, RACGP and ACRRM to produce rural generalist anaesthesia graduates who can deliver safe anaesthesia and perioperative care in rural and remote areas. The RGA Training Program replaces the Joint Consultative Committee on Anaesthesia (JCCA).
The RGA training positions are located at Whyalla/Port Augusta, Clare/Port Pirie, Mount Gambier, Waikerie/Berri, and Murray Bridge.
This year the RGA Orientation was held over 2 and a half days 24-26 January 2024 and included all aspects of RG Anaesthetics from an overview of curriculum and assessments to advanced airway management and of course lots and lots of pharmacology.
Dr Pete Gilchrist, RGPSA RG Anaesthetics Advisor, was ably assisted by Drs Yi Han Cheng, Min-Qi Lee, Bill Geyer, Jason Bament, Marni Calvert, Rod Mitchell, Frasier Vivian and Dr Lisa White in facilitating the workshop.

On Saturday the 17th of February 2024, RGPSA Obstetrics Advisor Dr Kris Bascomb and Consultant Obstetrician, Dr Kati King hosted 7 enthusiastic attendees for a Rural Generalist Obstetrician (RGO) Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI) workshop in Nuriootpa. We thank Flinders University Rural and Remote Health SA for letting us use their campus and sims rooms.

EFN and FUNLHN Clinical Skills and Simulation Workshop September 2023
The Eyre and Far North Local Health Network and Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network joined forces for the first time to provide a clinical skills and simulation workshop for 8 Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) on Friday the 29th of September 2023.
The workshop focused on neonatal resus and responding to critically unwell paediatric patients. It was a great opportunity for the junior doctors and the medical education teams to get to know each other, share experiences and learn in a safe and supportive environment.
Special thanks to MEOs Sam Seemanpillai and Chloe Devonshire-Gill for organising the day and to Dr Louise Williams, Dr Ali Lydeamore and Dr Pete Gilchrist for running the education and simulation sessions.

Trauma focussed clinical simulation workshop at Whyalla June 2023
Rural Medical Interns and Resident Medical Officers from the Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network got together in Whyalla for a trauma focussed clinical simulation workshop. The program consisted of tutorials, simulated trauma patients and clinical skills stations focussed on femoral nerve and fascia iliaca blocks, femoral fracture splinting and pelvic fracture binding.
A huge thanks to Dr Louise Williams, Dr Yihan Cheng, the FUN Medical Education Officer, Sam Seemanpillai, and Dr Pete Gilchrist for putting together the program and supporting the learning of the next generation of Rural Generalists.
