Inaugural Rural International Medical Graduates (IMG) Orientation 2026
The first rural International Medical Graduates (IMG) Orientation was held on 7-8 March 2026 at the Education Development Centre in Hindmarsh.
Many of the doctors caring for rural communities in South Australia began their careers overseas, and this new program is a chance to ensure doctors feel supported, prepared, and ready to provide high-quality care from day one.
Seventeen new rural IMG doctors in training attended for Aboriginal cultural awareness with Hayden Bromley from Bookabee, health communications with Dr Liz Chye, and clinical skills sessions covering vascular access and lines, assessment and acute care, tubes and monitoring, and wound and immobilisation. These sessions were facilitated by Drs Mike Beckoff, Pete Gilchrist, Ange Travis and Kris Bascomb – our RGPSA Clinical Lead and Advisors.
To supplement this weekend’s learnings, the doctors had also previously undertaken the online Hitting the Ground Running program with the Prevocational Medical Council Victoria.
This comprehensive program provides our new IMGs a solid foundation from which to start their rural training journey, refreshing and consolidating clinical skills and patient care aspects that are crucial to working in frontline Australian healthcare – particularly in a rural setting.
It was an incredibly successful two days with fantastic feedback from those who took part – so a big thank you to everyone involved.
The program will be run again in 2027, as part of the many ways in which RGPSA supports doctors on their path to rural generalism.

Advanced Certificate of Rural General Anaesthesia Orientation 2026
On 16-18 January our 2026 Advanced Certificate of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia trainees came together for their orientation in Naracoorte. This is a great introduction to the field of rural generalist anaesthesia before dispersing across the state to commence their training.
Day 1 covered navigating the year including curriculum, assessments, logbooks and exams followed by requirements for EPAs, paediatrics and obstetric requirements. Previous ACRGA trainee Dr Cassie Holt covered “What I wish I knew before I started” giving great insights into the year ahead for our new trainees.
Day 2 looked at the importance of the pre-op assessment, common anaesthetic/airway equipment, machine checks, practical harmacology, inductions and BLS/ALS refresher.
Day 3 covered managing airway crises, maintenance, emergence and recovery in the morning session followed by introduction to ultrasound use in RGA practice and an afternoon simulation session.
Session facilitators include Drs Jacob Cappelletto, Sophie Rymill, Rod Mitchell, Dr Caitlin Kerrigan, and David Mills.
Thank you to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners for funding the Orientation Dinner.
A big thank you and appreciation to Drs Pete Gilchrist and Min-Qi Lee for their dedication in organising and delivering this quality program and for their ongoing mentoring and support of our rural RGA trainees.

Advanced Certificate of Rural General Anaesthesia Orientation 2025
2025 saw the third orientation for the Rural Generalist Anaesthesia Training Program (RGA) that has been jointly developed between ANZCA, RACGP and ACRRM to produce rural generalist anaesthesia graduates who can deliver safe anaesthesia and perioperative care in rural and remote areas. The RGA Training Program replaces the Joint Consultative Committee on Anaesthesia (JCCA).
Six eager new anaesthetics AST trainees came together for an orientation weekend on 18 and 19 January 2025 which served as a great introduction to the field of rural generalist anaesthesia before dispersing across the state to commence their training.
Held at Flinders University Rural and Remote Health SA – Victor Harbor campus and Southern Fleurieu Health Service, Drs Cassie Holt, James Evenden, Paul Galea, Vishnu Chakravarthe, Lakshmi Sunderasan and Cherilyn White were educated and supported across the weekend by experienced rural generalist anaesthetists (RGA) Drs Pete Gilchrist, Jason Bament, Justin Shute and Consultant Anaesthetists Drs Min Qi Lee and Rod Mitchell.
An additional big thanks to Drs Tyson Whitelaw and Jacob Cappelletto, 2024 trainees who shared their respective first-hand insights into the program from their recent RGA training experience. The RGPSA would also like give a special thanks to the RACGP for their ongoing commitment to rural medicine and kindly sponsoring a dinner for the group.
Rural Intern Clinical Sim day at Adelaide Health Simulation - July 2025
On Saturday July 12th RGPSA hosted its second annual Rural Intern Clinical Sim day at Adelaide Health Simulation (AHS) with 24 interns from across rural and regional SA attending. The interns were put through their paces with skills stations involving trauma and airway management and obstetric emergencies before putting those newly acquired skills to use in simulated scenarios through the afternoon. Thanks to the incredible high fidelity simulation environment at AHS and the amazing medical and technical staff, the interns were able to practice high risk skills in a safe and supportive manner. Each group of interns were able to watch their peers undertake the scenario through one-way glass and then join in on the following debrief to offer comments and consolidate learning.
The RGPSA would like to thank all the facilitators who gave up their own time to come along and assist in training their junior colleagues, Dr Kris Bascomb, Dr Jess Martyn, Dr Jacob Cappelletto and Dr Tom Ryan. A big thank you also to Jane Longmire of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and Rohan Watts from Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine who represented their respective colleges and answering career and training pathway questions.
